The dreaded "Death Wobble" and how to fix it!
So you're experiencing the dreaded “death wobble” issue our amazing 7 slot vehicles are notorious for, and it's more common on stock and cheaply lifted vehicles than we think. Now you may be stuck on the side of the highway wondering why this has happened to your NEW Jeep Wrangler or Jeep Gladiator and are probably regretting your purchase, however the fixes are simple and can usually be diagnosed within a couple of hours at home! First though we need to ask ourselves a couple questions.
So what is deathwobble and what causes it? Death wobble itself is the violent and rapid movement of your front two wheels that ultimately transfers up the steering column to your steering wheel. This movement is scary, especially when traveling down the highway. Now you may be asking yourself, why does this happen if my vehicle is X amount of months old or has x amount of miles, and now you're contemplating your vehicle purchase. Don't fret, here is why it happens.
Death wobble on a Jeep is usually caused by looseness or wear in the steering and suspension system, not just one single bad part. The first step is to inspect every front-end component for play, including the track bar, tie rod ends, drag link, ball joints, wheel bearings, and control arm bushings. Even a small amount of movement in the track bar can create violent shaking at highway speeds. On lifted Jeeps like the Jeep Wrangler or older Jeep Cherokee models, improper suspension geometry can make the problem worse, especially after adding larger tires or budget lift kits.
So how do I stop this?
Easy!
Let's start by checking each of these steering and geometry parts for this. This can usually be done with jacks and lifting the front end to see what component is the cause. If you have a friend or know someone with a car lift that can accommodate lifting the vehicle up while allowing the front end to be fully unloaded, this is the most optimal as you can get underneath the vehicle and look at each component thoroughly. Go through each component and see if there is any unusual movement with any of the ball joints or any of the other wearable parts then you can quickly diagnose it as being one of the issues. From there you can either change those wearable parts or completely upgrade that whole component to an aftermarket component. Here at JKS Manufacturing we offer a variety of steering and geometry correction component upgrades for your Jeep. Most of these parts are 1.5” - 2” DOM Tubing, allowing for a strong replacement to its factory counterpart. So when replacing these parts, JKS has you covered with heavy duty trackbars, Beefier tie rods, and easy to install replacement usable parts to keep up with maintenance.
If the issue persists after replacing the ball joints or suspension and steering parts then it may be time to take it to a professional for a diagnosis. This issue may be due to non balanced tires or uneven tread wear, causing the ball joints to push the vehicle’s steering to cause another instance of death wobble.
Also Caution!
While a good upgraded steering stabilizer is nearly required when increasing tire size, it may not solve the root cause of If the Jeep has worn suspension or steering parts, the wobble will eventually return. The stabilizer should be viewed as a supporting component rather than the actual solution. Many experienced Jeep builders focus first on tightening suspension geometry, replacing worn joints, and verifying alignment specs before considering steering dampers or additional upgrades. After you’ve gone through these, JKS offers several options for stabilizers as well to help like mentioned before. For those of you with big tires, we recommend the Fox 2.0 ATS Steering stabilizer that allows you full adjustability.
After all this is done you should be buttoned up and ready to hit the trail again! However, this isn't the end of the road for you. It is important to regularly check these components periodically as it allows you to stay ahead of the game. After a trail run where you are pushing these components to its capacity then it's definitely recommended to go over these products again as they may need a replacement again.
