JKS Manufacturing outsmarts the temperamental SmartBar™ that continues to cause problems for owners of the 2007-2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

The electronic front swaybar disconnect system – or SmartBar™ – equipped on Wrangler JK Rubicon models was a welcome addition and a strong selling point for those of us who take our vehicles off-road. Unfortunately, the failure rate of this system has left many Rubicon owners frustrated and disappointed. The problem lies in the design, which is overly complicated and equally susceptible to malfunction. The SmartBar™ circuitry also ties into, and can be affected by, the vehicle’s TIPM module which has its own history of reliability issues.

Problems with the electronic swaybar can occur at any time. Early signs of trouble include a locking mechanism that is slow to respond and a dashboard indicator light that flashes erratically. Because the electronic swaybar cannot be serviced, the only remedy is complete replacement of the swaybar system. The cost of replacement is approximately $1,500, and the new swaybar is just as vulnerable to failure as the original.

The Electronic Swaybar Cable Conversion allows the driver to mechanically actuate the swaybar locking mechanism on Wrangler JK Rubicon models. This simple conversion kit eliminates the overcomplicated electronic actuation system that has caused so much frustration and disappointment for Rubicon owners around the world. With the system converted to mechanical operation, the driver regains control of the front swaybar while maintaining a level of convenience not possible with conventional quick-disconnect links.

The conversion kit has been cleverly designed to install on the OE swaybar disconnect housing. A hole is drilled in the housing using a supplied drill guide to ensure accuracy. A heavy duty jacketed push-pull cable is installed to actuate the internal shift fork. At the opposite end of the cable there is a T-handle which is installed in a convenient location such as the inner fender or front bumper. To disconnect the front swaybar, the operator simply pulls the T-handle and turns it 1/4 turn to lock it in position. The procedure is reversed to reconnect the swaybar.

Among the many benefits, the Electronic Swaybar Cable Conversion allows the operator to disconnect or reconnect the front swaybar on unlevel surfaces. The conversion kit also maintains proper function of the swaybar indicator light on the dashboard so that the driver can tell at a glance if the swaybar is connected or disconnected. Perhaps the most compelling benefit is the cost. Since the OE Electronic Swaybar Disconnect cannot be serviced, the entire system must be replaced at a cost of approximately $1,500. Our conversion kit can be purchased for a fraction of that price, offering a substantial value and reliability that is impossible with the OE system.

  • Extremely reliable and simplified solution to the overly complicated and failure prone OE system 100%
  • Mechanical control of swaybar eliminates reliance on unreliable electronic circuitry and cheap internal motor
  • Heavy duty actuator cable ensures positive engagement and disengagement of the swaybar disconnector even on unlevel surfaces
  • Isolates control of swaybar from vehicle computer ensuring temperamental TIPM and other electrical systems cannot disable swaybar operation
  • Affordable alternative to factory replacement of non-serviceable electronic swaybar system
  • Supplied 2-way drill guide ensures accurate drilling and eliminates potential for error
